Hi, I have been researching hedgehogs as pets. I am really set on getting this pet. Does anyone have any input on what they eat. I really need help with this. i can’t find any good answers. Would they be a good pet for a responsible thirteen year old. I go to school is that ok if I’m not there all the time.

many people like them, but some dont, only you can answer what is a good pet for you
NEVER get any pet your parents dont like and are not willing to help care for.
I got my first hedgehog when I was thirteen. I trust that you are responsible and don’t need your parent’s help with the general care. Hedgehogs are very low maintenance, but still make sure that your parents are on board for helping with vet bills.
I would suggest joining Chins and Quills: http://www.chins-n-quills.com. It is a very helpful web forum that is frequented by dozens of hedgehog (and chinchilla) owners, breeders and potential owners. It will help you by suggesting many more ideas on care and feeding.
For food, I would suggest the light cat food formulas of Wellness, Performatrin, Royal Canin, Eagle Pak, Blue Buffalo, Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover’s Soul, etc… You want to find the highest quality, low fat cat food that you can. C&Q will have many more options. A good rule of thumb is to find a food with meat as the top ingredient and no corn or wheat in the first three ingredients.
Hedgehogs, as you probably know, are nocturnal, so if you are not around in the day when they are sleeping, it is no big deal. I am in university and some of my longer days go from 8:30 AM until 9:30 PM, but my hedgehogs are still fine and will amuse themselves if they awaken before I get home.
Good luck!
